As a Principal at Menlo Ventures, Derek focuses on early-stage investments across AI, cloud infrastructure, and digital health. He partners with companies from seed through inflection, including Anthropic, Eve, Neon, and Unstructured.
Derek joined Menlo from Bain & Company, where he advised technology investors on opportunities ranging from machine learning infrastructure to orbital launch. He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard, and served as President of The Harvard Crimson while on campus. His passion for media led him to begin his career as a journalist at Forbes.
Today, Derek is the author of Menlo’s widely-cited AI research, including the firm’s flagship State of Enterprise AI reports. Outside of work, he enjoys playing with cameras, drones, and following the latest commentary on the future of news on Twitter (X): @derekgxiao.
